The law is changing.
Is your home ready?
From 1 January 2027, every Queensland home must have photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms in every bedroom, connecting hallway and storey. We inspect, install and certify — so you're covered before the deadline.
One goes off. They all go off. That's the new standard.
Book My UpgradeFive boxes every Queensland
home must tick
Photoelectric
Detects smoke using a beam of light — faster to respond to smouldering fires, one of the most common ways house fires start. Ionisation sensors are out.
Interconnected
Every alarm linked — by wire or wirelessly. When one detects smoke, they all sound, alerting everyone in the home at once.
Powered properly
Hardwired to mains power, or fitted with a sealed 10-year battery. Existing hardwired alarms must be replaced with hardwired.
AS 3786-2014
Every alarm must comply with Australian Standard AS 3786-2014 — look for the marking on the unit itself.
Right locations
Every bedroom, every hallway connecting bedrooms, every storey — and the ceiling of registered caravans and motorhomes.
Every home. No exceptions.
No matter where you live on the Fraser Coast or what kind of home you're in, the same rules apply by 1 January 2027.
Houses & units
Owner-occupied homes and apartments across Hervey Bay, Maryborough and surrounds.
Rentals & landlords
Investment properties must be compliant — landlords and property managers carry the responsibility.
Caravans & motorhomes
Registered caravans and motorhomes need a compliant alarm on the ceiling too. Grey nomads, we've got you.

Smoke alarm law FAQs
What's changing in Queensland from 1 January 2027?
All Queensland homes, units, and registered caravans and motorhomes must have compliant smoke alarms installed by 1 January 2027. It's the final stage of legislation introduced in 2017, rolled out over 10 years.
What does "compliant" actually mean?
Alarms must be photoelectric, interconnected, comply with Australian Standard AS 3786-2014, not contain an ionisation sensor, and be hardwired or powered by a sealed 10-year battery.
What does "interconnected" mean?
Your alarms are connected to each other — directly wired or wirelessly. If one alarm detects smoke, they all go off, alerting everyone in the home at the same time no matter where the fire starts.
Where do smoke alarms need to be installed?
In every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, on every storey — and on the ceiling of registered caravans and motorhomes.
How do I know if my current alarms are compliant?
Look for the AS 3786-2014 marking on the alarm. It's time to replace your alarms if they're more than 10 years old, contain an ionisation sensor, or don't interconnect with the other alarms in your home. Not sure? We'll check for you — that's the easy part of our job.
Wireless or hardwired — which do I need?
Hardwired alarms connect to mains power and must be installed by a qualified electrician — and if your current alarms are hardwired, replacements must be too. Wireless alarms interconnect without cabling and run on a sealed 10-year battery. We'll recommend the right option for your home in your free consultation.
Don't wait for the
December rush.
